Seniors Ride Free Program
Seniors in Illinois, aged 65 and over, are eligible to ride mass transit for free. In the Chicago and north suburban area, this means that seniors are eligible for free rides on Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra and PACE Bus routes. Seniors must have either the Senior Reduced Fare Card or the Senior Ride Free Smart Card in order to ride for no charge. For more information, call RTA at 846-7000.

Taxicabs
- New Trier Township Dial-a-Ride Taxi Service
Door-to-door taxi service that provides registered riders with discounted fares. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, residents call a designated taxi service and make a reservation for their trip. To pay the reduced fare, riders simply show their card. Residents must apply in person for a Dial-a-Ride card and may do so at the New Trier Township office (739 Elm Street, Winnetka, 847-446-8202); North Shore Senior Center (161 Northfield Road, Northfield, 847-784-6000); or Meskill Senior Center (3000 Glenview Road, Wilmette, 847-256-9686). To verify for eligibility as a senior, residents must present proof of age and residency (driver's license, state ID, RTA travel card).

A curb-to-curb dial-a-ride service for individuals with disabilities who cannot use the fixed route system. Service is provided in areas where CTA and PACE Service is provided and during the hours and days when fixed route service operates.
Rides need to be reserved one day in advance; fares are at least the cost of the full fare on a fixed route bus or train; and service is provided for all types of trips, including medical, shopping, and personal.
Individuals who are interested in using ADA Paratransit Service must apply and be found eligible, according to ADA guidelines. The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is responsible for determining eligibility. Call the RTA at (312) 917-4357 or TTY (312) 917-1338 and ask for an ADA Paratransit Application.

The service is available Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All trips must occur within the Township and nearby towns. A minimal fee is billed to the user for each round trip. This program is a cooperative effort funded by New Trier Township and the North Shore Senior Center.

A door-to-door transportation program for persons with severe mobility impairment who use a wheelchair or motorized scooter. Chicago Disability Transit provides rides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in a lift-equipped van. Registered users receive a discount. Fees are paid by credit card or personal check at the time of the ride.

- AARP Driver Safety Education Program
The AARP Drivers Safety Program class consists of two four-hour days, and is designed as a driving refresher for motorists age 50 and older. The class is offered at the North Shore Senior Center (847-784-6000).or the Meskill Senior Center (847-256-9111). The course provides education and training concerned with the driver's license test and accident prevention. Completion of the two-day class may entitle the participant to a discount on his or her auto insurance. Registration is required. - AARP Online Driver Safety CourseThe AARP Driver Safety Education course also is available online. The course is self-paced and interactive and can be taken at the time and place of your choice.

Disabled Parking Cards may be obtained in lieu of the State disabled vehicle license and provide the same privileges as the plate. The card may be used in any vehicle in which the cardholder is a driver or passenger. It must be displayed so it can be seen from the outside when parking in a handicapped space. Persons who qualify for the Illinois Department on Aging's Circuit Breaker program are entitled to purchase state license plates at half price through the state's Reduced Fee License Plate program. Persons qualifying for Circuit Breaker will receive a discount card automatically. It must be submitted with the license plate application each year. The discount applies to one set of plates per household per year. The program is administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue. The Village of Wilmette offers a $10 reduction on vehicle stickers to residents over 65 years of age with a maximum annual income of $33,450 for a one person household, $38,250 for a two person household, and $43,000 for a three or more person household. These income levels are under HUD guidelines. Apply at the Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue, when purchasing your vehicle sticker.
